Authorities seize fake shoes
MORE than 2,000 pairs of counterfeit athletic shoes were confiscated at a garment market on Qipu Road, which is well known for selling copies of famous brands of clothing and accessories, Hongkou District authorities said yesterday.
A local trade company provided tips to authorities and the running shoes were found at a stall named Renwoxing at the Xingwang Inter-national Garment Plaza.
With labels like Converse, Levi's and Vans, the shoes were sold for about 30 yuan (US$4) per pair. Authentic versions of such shoes usually cost hundreds of yuan, said officials with the Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision, Hongkou District Branch.
The bureau also found the counterfeit shoes were stored in a reconstructed public bath house.
The owner and his staff were handed over to police.
Officials said they were still calculating the total value involved in the case.
Officials said they will look into whether the vendor also owns an online store.
Jin Liangjun, deputy director of the bureau, said the fake products sold on many e-commerce websites often come from Qipu Road.
"E-commerce has become the latest way to sell counterfeit items and it's hard to catch the operators," he said.
