Authorities warn of traffic for Qingming

THE Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau has warned that the city roads will be chock-a-block with traffic for the Qingming Festival next month.
The bureau said that traffic will worsen between March 31 and April 7 when an estimated 6.66 million people head out to the cemeteries to pay respects to departed family members.
Qingming Festival is on April 5 this year.
Traffic congestion is expected at some sections of S2, S4, G50, S5, G1501 expressways that lead to cemeteries in the Pudong New Area, Jiading and Qingpu districts.
The Huaxia Elevated Road, Tanglu Road, Zhufeng Highway, Hunan Highway, Jiasong Road N., Yueluo Road and Xinsiping Highway will also see heavy congestion.
There will be an extra 840,000 vehicles on the roads between March 31 and April 7. March 31 and April 1 are expected to the busiest.
The three-day Qingming Festival holiday from April 5-7 will see about 5.4 million people heading out with traffic expected to be heavy from 8am to 11:30am.
The festival is also a time for spring outing, making it worse for the authorities to manage traffic. Vehicles with seven seats or less will be allowed a toll-free use of expressways. Shuttle buses connecting Metro stations with cemeteries have been arranged.
Shanghai has 44 cemeteries and 10,400 urns will be buried during the festival.
