Awards canceled over violations
WHAT should have been a proud occasion for two individuals and four companies has instead turned sour.
They were all due to receive the city’s May 1 Labor Medal and May 1 Labor Certificate. But the awards were canceled for violations including driving under the influence and concealing work safety accidents, Shanghai General Trade Union said yesterday.
The medal is set up to award the city’s outstanding employees and the certificate is an equivalent award for institutions and companies.
The union released the award lists yesterday, with 598 individuals and 176 companies cited.
The union said the selection and reviewing standard were very strict, and the lists of candidates were checked by other authorities including officials from work safety, tax, industry, commerce, and environment protection authorities.
The union said the two candidates were removed from the list as they were reported for driving under the influence and other misbehaviors when the list was published to hear the public’s opinion.
The four companies whose citations were canceled were because of violations that included concealing work safety accidents from local authorities.
All individual candidates on the list had to first go through inspections by Shanghai Administration for Industry and Commerce during the preliminary review.
Three hundred working groups or departments will be cited for the city’s “Workers’ Pioneer” awards. Thirty-one individuals, five companies and institutions, and 32 working groups received the national labor awards.
