BMW thief goes to jail

A MAN was sentenced to 11-and-a-half years in prison yesterday for stealing items valued at nearly 800,000 yuan (US$118,218), including a BMW, from a family.

Wang Lei, 28, a Henan Province native, told Zhabei District People's Court that he stole the items to get revenge. He said the victim surnamed Huang scolded him when his bicycle bumped into Huang's car in February, so he followed the man home.

"I saw the light on in an apartment on the ninth floor and believed Huang lived there," the defendant said.

Wang returned on February 10 and broke into Huang's apartment. He stole three laptops, a DVD player, a watch, other items and a key to Huang's BMW, the court heard.

"I returned to the community one day in April and drove away in the car," Wang told the court.

Wang's sentence was heavy due to the high value of the stolen items, judges said.
