Baby at center of ‘villa robbery drama’
A man accused of holding a woman hostage at her villa and threatening her with a knife and a toy grenade has been arrested for robbery.
Minhang District prosecutors said the suspect surnamed Zheng entered the villa on the night of January 26 via an unlocked door. Inside a young couple was chatting, while their 1-year-old baby was nestled in the arms of his grandmother, surnamed Yan.
Zheng attempted to seize the baby but Yan held onto the child, who was crying in pain. His mother, surnamed Zhu, volunteered to replace her son as hostage.
Zheng let Yan take the child upstairs and held Zhu at knife point. He told Zhu’s husband to tie her hands and feet.
Then, he took out something that looked like an explosive device and demanded 400,000 yuan (US$58,065) in cash, prosecutors said.
While the husband was considering calling friends to borrow money, prosecutors said, Yan took the chance to call the police. They broke into the villa from an open window and subdued Zheng.
During interrogation, Zheng said he had lost nearly 600,000 yuan in gambling and had decided on robbery as a solution.
