Baby wet wipes contain skin irritant

WET wipes said to be suitable for babies actually contain chemicals that irritate the skin, the city consumer watchdog said yesterday.

Of 50 random wet wipe samples tested recently by the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission, 21 were found to contain preservative CIT that can cause irritation.

Among the 25 samples for babies, 12 contained CIT. These included products said to be suitable for use on babies’ mouths.

Wet wipes containing the preservative included ones made by leading Chinese brands Nepia and Combi and baby wipes by Lovology.

“Parents should be careful when choosing wet wipes,” said Tang Jiansheng, the commission’s deputy secretary-general.

Combined with other preservatives, CIT can curb microbe growth.

However, in high concentrations it can lead to burns. It can also cause allergic reactions, redness, swelling and blisters, the commission said.

While the European Union bans single CIT in cosmetic category wet wipes, there is no standard in China.
