Ban for vehicles ignoring inspections

VEHICLES that missed the mandatory inspection for three straight years will be banned from the city roads from November, with authorities saying their registration information will be removed from the database, making them illegal.

Any cars without registration will be seized. The driver will be fined and points deducted from the driving license.

The warning, jointly issued by the Shanghai Transport Commission, Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau and Shanghai Public Security Bureau, aims to eliminate heavily-polluting vehicles, also known as yellow label vehicles.

There are currently 107,000 cars that have missed the mandatory checks deadline in Shanghai. Among them are 74,000 yellow label vehicles, blamed for much of the air pollution, the Shanghai Transport Commission said yesterday.

Over 40,000 cars were three years overdue, the commission said, adding that the owners would be notified through short message. “If the vehicles fail to show up in two months time, their registration information will be canceled from our database, which will make it illegal on the roads,” said Ye Xing, a commission official.

“The 40,000 vehicles don’t have traffic violation records either, which means a large number of them have either been abandoned or are no longer in use anymore,” Ye said.

“We will have a better idea of how many polluting vehicles are still in use in Shanghai after the cancelation of their registrations,” he said.
