Ban on car plate bidding software
ALL types of add-on software will be banned during bidding for Shanghai car plates this month, the auction house announced yesterday.
The next auction is scheduled for May 23.
The announcement follows allegations that some agents had made simultaneous bids with the help of software and were awarded nearly 1,000 licenses last month.
The allegations however proved to be false.
But Shanghai Transport Commission said it had detected some agents who used software to boost their chances of winning the bids. Shanghai International Commodity Auction Co, the operator of the monthly action, said it would technically block agents using the software, including slowing down net speed and banning them from using certain functions.
From this month, the software ban will be written into the regulations for bidders when 7,482 car plates are made available this month — 806 less than last month.
Agents have shrugged off the new regulation saying they don’t need the help of any third party software for bidding.
One of them, surnamed Yu, told Shanghai Daily that his company’s success rate was over 11 percent last month, while the city’s average success rate was 5.4 percent. Yu charges 10,000 yuan (US$1,611.86) for every successful bid.
“The market is there. We have many experienced bidders and fast internet access,” said Yu.
He said the company was already booked for this month’s auction. New customers have to wait till next month.
A total of 152,298 people registered for April’s auction in the hope of landing one of the 8,288 plates up for grabs. The average price was 80,758 yuan last month.
