Bandits use babies to hit supermarkets
THREE women who used babies and toddlers to distract cashiers as they stole goods from supermarkets have been jailed for theft, the Xuhui District People’s Court said.
Two of them were sentenced to one year for stealing goods worth over 7,000 yuan (US$1,081). The third, a first offender who stole more than 3,000 yuan worth of goods, was sentenced to six months with a six-month reprieve.
The babies and toddlers were borrowed from accomplices who will stand trial later.
In August last year, a supermarket near Shanghai Stadium reported several thefts to police in Xuhui District. This case was soon linked to similar thefts at other supermarkets in the city.
After watching surveillance videos, officers soon identified the three women as suspects.
The video showed that the women, one holding a baby while another pushed a trolley, took items off the shelves and proceeded to the checkout.
When they arrived at the counter, they used the baby to distract the cashier while one of them rushed out with the trolley full of goods.
They committed several thefts across the city in August and September last year. However, on September 11, they were captured as they fled from a supermarket with stolen goods.
