Bank boss jailed for selling data
A FORMER deputy bank manager has been sentenced to six months in prison after being found guilty of selling customers’ personal data.
The man, surnamed Yang, illegally obtained more than 10,000 pieces of information and sold them for nearly 375,000 yuan (US$57,500), the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.
The trial was the first in Shanghai since an amendment to the criminal law — designed to better protect people’s personal data — was made earlier this year.
Under the new legislation, anyone found guilty of illegally trading in such information can be jailed for up to seven years.
The court said Yang downloaded the information from the bank’s database and sold it for between 25 and 50 yuan “per piece.” It said it showed leniency in its sentencing as the defendant handed himself in to police.
