Beggar detained after man stabbed to death

A beggar accused of stabbing another vagrant to death near People's Square Station has been detained, officers said today.

Metro police said the 32-year-old suspect, surnamed Wang, attacked the victim, surnamed Li, 46, with a pocketknife at 1:30am on Tuesday near the station's Exit 1 after a long fight.

"There were two people sleeping on the ground when the stabber went downstairs,” a witness said. “For some reason, the man hit one of the pair with a stick and later stabbed him with a knife. They fought with each other for a long time.”

Another witness said they were likely fighting over “territory” since beggars usually lay claim to certain street corners or other places.

Wang fled and Li was found dead at the scene from excessive bleeding caused by the stab wounds, police said.

Police captured Wang on Nanjing Road W. around 2am that day.

When a Shanghai Daily reporter arrived at the station this afternoon, no beggars were found in the passageways.

Metro operator Shentong Group told Shanghai Daily that they had cleared the beggars in the station with help from police officers and would enhance patrols in stations to prevent such incidents.
