Beijing trains get armed guards
MORE than 50 armed police officers will patrol high-speed trains running between Shanghai and Beijing, as part of the enhanced security measures introduced ahead of next week’s military parade in the capital.
Armed with pistols, batons and tear gas, 16 squads of officers will help to ensure no one spoils the fun atmosphere either before or on the special day, Shanghai police said yesterday.
Also, until September 5, all passengers traveling by train to Beijing from Shanghai Railway Station or Hongqiao Railway Station will be required to undergo tighter security checks of their luggage.
People booked on to the affected trains should allow more time for the new procedures, police said.
