Bereaved mom gives birth again
A 42-year-old woman who lost her only son, a firefighter‚ gave birth to a baby girl last week following multiple attempts at artificial insemination, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University said yesterday.
Ying Xianmei’s son, Liu Jie, died on May 1, 2014 while fighting a fire in a residential building in Xuhui District.
Liu was only 20 years old when he died. He was posthumously recognized as a hero by China’s Ministry of Public Security.
Ying was deeply bereaved by the loss of her son, according to the hospital. She said the family had just purchased an apartment in Shanghai for Liu, who was preparing to get married.
“When we heard that our only son died, we felt like the sky was falling down on us,” she said.
Following her son’s untimely death, Ying decided in 2015 that she wanted to have another baby. But she was 39 years old at the time and her ovaries were deteriorating, thus making natural conception nearly impossible.
It was not until Shanghai Fire Corps connected her with assisted reproduction specialists last year that her hopes for a new baby were kindled again.
After five attempts at embryo implantation, Ying was confirmed to be pregnant in November last year. She said she owed the pregnancy in part to her son’s colleagues who gave her courage and belief in her decision.
“That evening when I was told I was pregnant again, I stayed up all night with this feeling that my son was coming back to me,” she recalled.
“When I hold my baby in my arms, I feel like I’m a mother again,” she said.
