Big crowds and damage at show

CROWD control measures have been introduced at the Shanghai International Science and Art Exhibition, as the event has attracted more visitors than expected, Shanghai Television reported yesterday.

Organizers also said that some exhibits had been damaged.

At 2pm yesterday, the queue at the China Art Museum, in the Pudong New Area, was very long, STV reported.

“You have to get here pretty early to avoid the queue,” a foreign visitor told the television station.

“We’re attracting more than 10,000 visitors a day now,” said Yang Zheqing, a member of the organizing staff.

“Measures have been taken to avoid dangers,” added Yang.

To avoid crushes, the museum has set up barriers to guide visitors queuing at popular exhibits such as a 3D makeover of classic artwork “Along the River During Qingming Festival”, created by Zhang Zeduan during the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

There has been damage to some exhibits, said organizers.

A sculpture of a lotus was found to have lost some parts after being on display for several days, while holes were made in a fabric screen over a monitor, said officials.

According to a volunteer at the exhibition, it usually requires about an hour to view all the sections and the visiting time of each section has been cut to about 5 minutes.

The exhibition, which opened on August 12, runs until Friday.
