Big trucks block roads near exhibition center

A LACK of parking spaces for trucks at an exhibition center in the Pudong New Area is causing heavy congestion on surrounding roads, a man has said.

The person, surnamed Zhou, said that it sometimes takes him 10 minutes to get through the convoy of trucks waiting on Huamu Road to access the Shanghai New International Expo Center.

“The jams happen several times a month,” said Zhou, who lives at the Century Park development.

“Some people have sold up and moved away because of the traffic, while those who remain just have to suffer,” he told Shanghai Morning Post.

No other residents were interviewed in the report.

An official from the exhibition center said the problem is due to there being too few parking spaces for trucks.

During both the tourism and machinery shows last month, the line of trucks trying to get to the center stretched back 3 kilometers along Luoshan, Longyang, Fangdian and Huamu roads, the person said.

The center official said the facility had just four halls when it opened, but now has 17.

It stages at least 80 major events every year.

The larger events can attract up to 1,000 trucks, though the center has parking only for 700, he said.

The facility said it cannot resolve the problem alone as doing so will require major changes to the infrastructure.

There needs to be collaboration with the government, the official said.
