Bird festival takes off

THE annual Dongtan Wetland Bird Festival opened yesterday at the Chongming Nature Reserve.

Chongming Dongtan is the best place for bird-watching in Shanghai as it attracts cranes, waterfowl and shorebirds as they head south to Australia.

More than 290 kinds of birds have been spotted at Dongtan in recent years, including hooded crane, mandarin duck, little curlew and black-faced spoonbill.

The festival runs until the end of February and features a range of related activities.
