Bird’s nests seized
SHANGHAI Customs seized nearly 40 kilograms of yanwo, or edible bird’s nest, from a passenger’s luggage, authorities announced yesterday.
According to customs, officers found 55 boxes of yanwo, weighing over 38 kilograms in total. Bird’s nests, which many Chinese people believe are high in nutritional value, are prohibited as they may pose risk to public health, particularly after recent outbreaks of bird flu in Southeast Asia.
