Blackmailer Gets Jail Sentence
A blackmailer who tried to gain 25,000 yuan (US$3,660) from an Auchan supermarket with bomb threats was sentenced yesterday to five and a half years in jail by Yangpu District No.1 People's Court.
The 18-year-old man surnamed Wang sent three cellphone messages to the supermarket, threatening to blow it up unless it paid the money before 5pm on February 16. Police evacuated the building and combed the area, but found no explosives.
The supermarket lost at least 200,000 yuan during the four-hour shutdown, the court heard.
Wang said he wanted revenge because he once lost his wallet at the supermarket.
