‘Blind date fraudster’ fooled doctor
A telecom fraud suspect has been arrested for defrauding a female doctor of 12,000 yuan (US$1,740), police said yesterday.
The suspect, a 54-year-old man surnamed Gao, called the victim claiming to be a doctor from another hospital and introduced her to another man on a blind date. In fact, Gao was the other man, said police in Jiading District, where the fraud took place.
Gao, in his guise as a blind date partner then asked for money from the victim, claiming he had no cash to pay for a banquet he planned for his family after his mother died.
Police said Gao alternated his identities and voices with his victim, but she realized she might have been a victim of fraud after finding out that other colleagues were offered blind dates by Gao.
Police said the suspect had found the contact information of his victim and her colleagues from the hospital’s website.
Gao had been sentenced or detained for fraud five times in the past 27 years, police said.
