Bogus art show conman jailed
A CONMAN who raked in 630,000 yuan (US$100,800) and 30,000 yuan worth of paintings and calligraphy works from artists around China has been jailed for 12 years for fraud, the People’s Court of Xuhui District said yesterday.
The man, surnamed Qiao, sent out more than 10,000 invitation letters from Beijing to professional and amateur artists promoting a bogus art award ceremony in 2013, and hooked more than 100 victims through the scam.
He claimed in the letter that several former high-level Party and government officials would be present, as well as dozens of famous artists from China and abroad.
Qiao enticed victims with claims that their work could be published as collections, stamps and calendars to be given as presents to high-profile figures and institutions.
Victims were asked to pay 6,350 yuan to take part and to mail their works to Qiao.
He was held in Beijing in October 2013 by Shanghai police, following a complaint by a city artist.
Qiao was jailed in December, said the court.
