Bogus 'lost student' jailed for sex attacks

A DEAF-MUTE man who posed as a Japanese student who had lost his way on campus and attempted to rape young women who came to his aid has been jailed, Huangpu District People's Court said yesterday.

Xie Lin, an unemployed 19-year-old, was sentenced to two and half years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted rape.

The Sichuan Province native, who came to Shanghai in February, lurked around Donghua University campus at night. When he spotted a target, he used the excuse of asking for directions to lure them into quiet areas.

On May 12, Xie spotted his first victim and showed her a piece of paper saying he was a Japanese student and wanted to find a print shop.

When the woman led him to the shop, Xie began to kiss and touch her.

He dragged her onto a lawn and tried to rape her. But the woman fought back and escaped, the court said.

Nine days later, Xie returned to the university on Yan'an Road and tried the same thing again.

However, the woman bit his shoulder and escaped.

Xie was caught by students who rushed to the scene.
