Bookmaking restaurateur detained
A RESTAURANT owner who allowed his customers to gamble on soccer matches during the 2010 World Cup has been given a five-month detention, the Jinshan District prosecutors office said yesterday.
The man, surnamed Wu, acted as an agent for a Macau-based casino.
He was apprehended after police were given his name by another agent arrested on similar charges last year.
Wu is said to have earned more than 20,000 yuan (US$3,200) in commission on the illicit bets, or about 10 percent of the total wagered by his customers.
Wu stopped taking bets when he heard about a police crackdown on gambling, but was unable to evade the police.
