Borrow books from a bookstore

A BOOKSTORE is inviting library cardholders to borrow its stock, under a link-up with city libraries.

Cardholders with Minhang District Library and Shanghai Central Libraries — an alliance of 300 public libraries around the city — can borrow books without charge from Xinhua Bookstore on Xinsong Road in Minhang District.

Once returned, books will be bought by the Minhang library and transferred to its stock.

“This enables readers to borrow the newest selections which due to procurement cycles often take six months to reach libraries after release,” said Min Tengchao, vice director of the library.

About half of the 20,000 titles on sale at the bookstore are included in the program, which was introduced in late July.

Excluded ranges include schoolwork companions, dictionaries, software manuals and some children’s books.

It is not clear how many English titles are in the deal.

Cardholders can borrow three books with a total price of under 100 yuan (US$16) at one time, for up to 28 days.

Min said 106 books have been borrowed since July 28.

A young mother, surnamed Sun, in the bookstore yesterday, said she’d heard about the program from friends.

“It’s great that I can borrow books for my daughter here near our neighborhood because some children’s books are not worth buying,” Sun said.

The scheme has a cap of 180,000 yuan, said officials.
