Botched treatment in illegal clinics kills 11
ELEVEN patients have died this year as a result of treatment they received in illegal medical clinics, the city’s health authority said at the weekend.
In the most recent case, a woman collapsed and died leaving an illegal clinic located in an apartment above a wet market in the Pudong New Area.
The Shanghai Population and Family Planning Commission’s health supervision bureau has found 1,664 medical clinics operating without a license this year, officials said.
Some 89 owners have faced criminal charges in 183 criminal cases concerning the injury or death of patients, the bureau said. In total, 985 clinics faced penalties, it added
The illegal clinics have been fined 7.15 million yuan (US$1.16 million), with 20 tons of drugs and medical equipment confiscated.
In the latest fatality, the 48-year-old victim, a native of Jiangsu Province, collapsed on her way from the second-floor clinic to a toilet on the floor below last month.
An ambulance was called but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The clinic was owned by a 41-year-old Anhui Province native, surnamed Yang, who has been detained by police.
He had been in business for more than five years, despite not being licensed to practice medicine, according to police.
“Most illegal clinics are at the border of urban and suburban areas and mainly serve out-of-towners,” the bureau said.
Many illegal clinics are used by migrant workers who do not have Shanghai residency which would entitle them to health care support.
While many are aware of the risks of illegal clinics, they still use them as they are cheaper than legitimate medical facilities.
The bureau called for city residents to report any illegal clinics in the city to its 962223 hotline.
