Branded baby clothes fail to pass local quality tests
SOME international brands of baby clothes and wool products failed local quality inspections with Folli Follie, Zara and Anna Sui on the black list, officials said yesterday.
The Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau tested about 100 batches of products, and 13 batches of baby clothes and 13 batches of wool products failed the test.
Altogether seven batches of the questioned products had a pH index higher than the standard, which could cause skin allergies.
The pH index of a coat produced by the Shanghai I-baby Home Co Ltd was 8.7, much higher than 7.5, the standard's upper limit.
Babies could experience itching or pricking on the skin if wearing the coat for a long time, officials said.
Near 20 batches of products had different textile content than that stated on the label, the bureau said. A Folli Follie baby skirt said it contained terylene, nylon and spandex, but tests showed it was all cellulose acetate fiber, officials said.
The Shanghai Pilion Trade Co Ltd, the agent of Folli Follie in Shanghai, said the company had not been told of the quality results. "The baby clothes were imported from Greece, and passed authorities' quality tests when coming into China," said Karen Deng, an official with the company.
Another 10 batches of products were found to have poor color fastness, such as a pair of Anna Sui trousers and a Zara baby jacket.
"The Anna Sui trousers also had inadequate fiber content and over-high pH index," said Sui Bo, an official with the bureau. "The quality was too poor."
The Joyce Boutique (China) Ltd, the agent of Anna Sui in Shanghai, was not available for comment.
Zara also couldn't be contacted for comment yesterday.
