Bravery award for burned man
A 25-YEAR-OLD man who was badly burned while alerting neighbors of fire will be presented with the Justice and Courage Award by Minhang District.
An official surnamed Wang from the district’s political and legal commission told Shanghai Daily yesterday that the district government had decided to award Wang Haibin with the honor for his courageous deed in saving others and putting himself in danger.
Wang suffered 88 percent burns. He remains in critical condition at Ruijin Hospital. The commission said it would pay the medical costs for Wang.
The fire broke out on the first floor of their apartment around 1:45am on Tuesday. Wang’s family were woken up by smoke.
Wang rushed out and climbed stairs to knock on the doors of 11 other families in the six-story building. Though the neighbors were woken up, they could not escape as the stairs were on fire. Wang then rushed through the burning stairs but fell down as he rushed to the first floor to open the locked iron door.
Many of the neighbors stayed indoors and rushed to balconies, waiting to be rescued.
