Breast-feeding rooms to double
SHANGHAI’S trade union federation said yesterday it plans to open 500 new breast-feeding rooms at workplaces and public places across the city.
The announcement coincided with the 23rd World Breastfeeding Week.
According to official figures, just 28 percent of Chinese infants under 6 months old are breast-fed, compared with a global average of 38 percent.
In China’s cities, the rate is just 16 percent, which some people blame on the lack of facilities for new mothers.
Since June 2013, the federation has opened 513 rooms for expectant and new mothers at companies and public places, including shopping centers, hospitals and parks.
The 500 new facilities will open before 2016 at railway stations, parks and hospitals, it said.
Women can also locate breast-feeding rooms across Shanghai by using a mobile phone application (available in Chinese only) called “ai xin ma mi xiao wu,” which translates as “love and care rooms for mothers.”
