Brief rain drags down mercury
A LATE evening thundershower brought slight relief to the city yesterday after the mercury climbed to a high of 34.5 degree Celsius in the afternoon, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
The bureau issued a yellow lightning alert for thundershower at 4:49pm due to a south-moving rainbelt. After the brief downpour, the mercury dropped to 27.7 degrees in downtown Xujiahui.
“The thundershower won't affect Wednesday’s maximum temperature. The influence it brought was not a systematic one,” said Kong Chunyan, a chief service officer at the bureau.
It is likely to stay cloudy well into the weekend with temperatures staying above 30 degrees. Today’s temperature is expected to range between a high of 32 and a low of 25 degrees.
A cold front is likely to attack the city on Friday night, which may produce rains and overcast skies but the threat of an Indian Summer with temperatures over 35 degrees is unlikely, weathermen said.
