Broadband users gain from network upgrade
MORE than 3 million broadband users will get free upgrade for Internet bandwidth up to 100 megabytes per second (Mbps) after China Telecom upgraded its network and launched a marketing promotion.
Families who have subscribed to Shanghai Telecom for more than two years can enjoy speed improvement and value-added services like high-definition video contents, according to Shanghai Telecom, the city’s biggest fixed-line operator.
Users with subscription of more than five years will get a free upgrade up to 50 Mbps and one free value-added services.
Those who have used their services for more than 10 years can upgrade network to 100 Mbps with two service packages. Users subscribing to Shanghai Telecom for two more years also get Internet speed improvement.
At present, the most normal broadband speed packages are between 10 to 30 Mbps.
More than 3 million local families are expected to enjoy the free upgrade, according to the carrier.
It was the first time China Telecom upgraded the network based on user history.
Shanghai Telecom aims to improve user loyalty through the upgrade as it faces competition from smaller rivals like China Mobile and China Unicom, industry insiders said.
More than 5 million Shanghai families use China Telecom’s broadband services, which offer average bandwidth of 32 Mbps.
