Brothers jailed over dumping
TWO brothers who illegally dumped nearly 32 tons of unprocessed waste in a field in Jinshan District have been sentenced to five months, with a five-month reprieve, for environmental pollution, Shanghai Railway Transport Court said.
The two brothers have run a waste recycle station since April. They did not apply for an official permit or process the waste, the court said. Instead, packages used to contain chemicals were dumped on the ground.
During checks in June and July, Jinshan environmental inspectors tested high levels of toxic substances such as benzene, toluene and ethylbenzene from the packages, the court said.
At that point, the brothers realized they had violated laws and handed themselves into police.
