Builder admits double murderin dispute over an unpaid bill
A BUILDING contractor yesterday admitted killing two people and severely injured a 15-month-old baby because he was owed 8,000 yuan (US$1,171).
Zhang Mingkai, 37, an Anhui Province native, pled guilty to murder and robbery when he appeared at the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court.
The victims were an unlicensed cabbie whose minibus Zhang stole, the debtor's daughter and her son.
The court heard that Zhang had built a house for Jia Xiaoqiang in May 2009. After completion, Jia still owed more than 8,000 yuan, Zhang said. Zhang tried to ask for the money several times but Jia always refused, the court heard.
"My workers urged me to pay their salaries before this Spring Festival but Jia still didn't pay a penny. So I wanted to get a vehicle to bump against him and let him get scared," Zhang told the court.
To get a vehicle for the job, Zhang called an unlicensed taxi, a minibus, in Nanqiao Town of Fengxian District on January 8. When they reached a remote spot, Zhang asked the driver to stop and demanded he hand over the keys.
When he refused, Zhang attacked him and put a rope around his neck.
"I didn't plan to kill him at first. But the driver resisted hard and I had to draw the rope tight," Zhang said.
Zhang hid the body in a nearby wood and drove off. But he crashed and had to abandon his plan, prosecutors said.
On January 19 Zhang went to Jia's home three times but Jia wasn't there.
On the third occasion, Zhang asked Jia's daughter, who was at home alone with her 15-month-old son, to look for Jia but she refused.
Zhang hit her on the head with an iron bar. When the baby woke up and cried, Zhang hit him on the head to silence him. He told the court he was afraid of drawing the attention of neighbors. Jia's daughter died and the baby suffered serious injuries.
The court didn't issue a verdict.
