Bund and Pearl tower on heritage list
THE Bund, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Xujiahui Cathedral and Jinmao Tower are among 13 local sites listed as China’s architectural masterpieces in the 20th century.
The Chinese Society of Cultural Relics and the Architectural Society of China named 98 architectural places across the nation for the first batch of sites to be put on the 20th Century Chinese Architectural Heritage List to make the public aware of the importance of preserving historic heritage.
“The list aims to make the public be aware of the protection on the modern architectural legacies,” said Cao Yongkang, director with the International Research Center for Architectural Heritage Conservation of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
The listed sites of the city reflected the great changes that had happened in China during the past century.
The Jinmao Tower, for instance, which was built in 1999, represented the fact that the country had the cutting-edge technology to build such a modern skyscraper in the late 1990s, Cao said.
Among other listed masterpieces of the city are the Park Hotel, and the Shanghai Exhibition Center on Nanjing Road W.
Lu Xun Museum in Hongkou District, which commemorates the leading figure of modern Chinese literature Lu Xun (1881-1936), has also been listed, along with the Wenyuan Building in the campus of Tongji University in Yangpu District, and the Caoyang Community, the city’s first “workers’ community” located in downtown Putuo District.
Sites further out on the list are Sheshan Observatory on Sheshan Hill and Fangta Tower Park in Songjiang District. Fangta Tower was built some 900 years ago.
The site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China near Xintiandi has also been listed.
Nationwide, the listed landmarks include the Great Hall of the People and the Monument to the People’s Heroes in Beijing, the Russian-style Saint Sofia Cathedral in Harbin, and historic buildings at Tsinghua, Nanjing and Wuhan universities.
