Bund鈥檚 past glory cherished in revamp
A major renovation in the Bund is near completion.
It involves a revamp of a historic market that will form a new shopping and art cluster with other classic buildings in the area that are being preserved, officials said yesterday.
The Central Mall and six other nearby historic buildings built in the 1920s on Nanjing Road E. will reopen to the public as “Bund Central” next year, according to Huangpu District government. The renovation started in August 2013.
The aim is to make the cluster a commercial landmark for upmarket shops, fine dining, performing arts venues, as well as a boutique hotel, said the Shanghai Bund Investment (Group) Co Ltd, the government-backed developer of the Bund Financial Zone.
The renovation site is the location of a longtime market that became a popular place for selling and repairing electronic appliances for decades.
Many historic features of the neoclassical, European style Central Mall building have been preserved. An old mailbox of the mall will be exhibited.
The five-story mall, covering about 6,000 square meters, was closed in 2006 along with nearby historic buildings for the renovation.
The appearance of the buildings have been preserved, but the inner structures have been demolished and sensitively rebuilt, said an official with Shanghai Construction Group that is carrying out the renovation.
Construction workers rebuilt the foundations for the buildings and stabilized the outer walls, before tearing down the inner structures that had been unstable for decades‚ the official said.
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is to stage regular performances at “Bund Central.”
