Bureau finds poor hygiene among food producers
A TOTAL of 25 food producers were added to an investigation list this week during quality inspections.
Most of the these companies were found to have poor food hygiene standards, the Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision said yesterday.
The bureau inspected Qiaojiazha Food Co Ltd, which was put on the list, in Huangpu District yesterday.
Officials found garbage bins were placed close to both raw and cooked food without covers or other protection.
In the space of one month, officials twice visited Shanghai Shenyi Food Co in Zhabei District. Last month, they found workers had produced steamed buns in a dirty workshop where water was collected on the ground and raw ingredients were placed on tables without protection.
Officials said that on their first visit they had ordered Shenyi Food to improve before April 20.
But the company ignored the order, officials said.
"We didn't find any sales record of the company, which is suspicious," said Liu Zhenhua, an official with the bureau.
The bureau said it may cancel the company's food production license.
Also yesterday, Vice Mayor Jiang Ping said it's not reasonable for supermarkets to return expired food to producers due to food safety concerns.
"Some producers take expired food and add illegal chemical additives to make 'fresh food,'" said Jiang.
