Burglary ringleader jailed for 13 years
A man who organized a gang of 19 people, including several minors, to commit burglaries in Shanghai and Taiyuan City in Shanxi Province on 27 occasions was sentenced to 13 years in jail and fined 100,000 yuan (US$15,224), the Fengxian District People’s Court said yesterday.
The stolen items were worth about 150,000 yuan, prosecutors said. The other gang members were dealt with earlier.
According to prosecutors, local police received 16 similar reports about burglaries in Fengxian District between December 2012 and January 2013.
After an investigation, police captured 19 members of the gang in Shanghai, Nanjing, and Guangdong Province.
Seven of them were minors and the youngest was only 12 years old.
The 12-year-old boy and his 13-year-old cousin told police they had been taught breaking and entering methods by a man in Shaoguan in Guangdong Province and had committed 12 burglaries in Fengxian over two weeks in December 2012.
An investigation revealed that the gang leader, surnamed Luo, recruited minors in his hometown Shaoguan and taught them how to use burglary tools bought online.
The gang committed 21 burglaries in Shanghai and six in Taiyuan.
After three years on the run, Luo, who was convicted of theft in 2009, was captured in Shaoguan last year.
