Bus anger leads to risk of jail

AN elderly woman jerking a bus steering wheel as the vehicle was moving, causing serious injury to a fellow passenger, has been charged with hazardous behavior and harming public security, the Songjiang District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.

The woman, surnamed Jiang, became angry when the driver could not give her change when she threw a 20-yuan (US$3) note into the coin box for a 1 yuan fare in the incident earlier this year.

She was further infuriated when the driver, surnamed Zhang, kept ignoring her as she refused to get change after the bus reached the terminal.

Jiang approached the driver again as she was about to get off. Again ignored, she grabbed the steering wheel. As Zhang braked the bus, a passenger was thrown onto the handrails and suffered fractured ribs.

Jiang faces up to 10 years in prison.
