Bus driver charged over death crash
THE 42-year-old driver, surnamed Zhao, was driving on Donghai Avenue on November 3 when the accident happened.
He heard a message on his cellphone — which served as an interphone network with colleagues — and tried to grab the phone but it fell to the ground, said prosecutors.
As he leaned down to retrieve it, the bus struck a safety barrier on the right side of the road, it is claimed.
Prosecutors said that Zhao sought to steer back but his over-correcting sent the bus careering across the highway, crashing into a lamppost and flipping onto its side.
Prosecutors said that while the phone was a factor, Zhao’s over-steering was the main cause of the accident.
The trial will be held on August 11. If found guilty, Zhao faces up to seven years in prison.
