Bus driver collapses at wheel, dies

A BUS driver died and several passengers were injured after he collapsed at the wheel on Sunday night, officials said yesterday.

The incident happened about 10:10pm on Sunday and the bus hit the sidewalk and then a lamppost on Zhongshan Road E. at Fangta Road S., the Songjiang District transportation commission said in a statement.

There were 11 passengers on the bus.

The driver, a man surnamed Wu, and eight passengers on the bus were taken to a nearby hospital.

Injuries to the passengers included fractures and severe bruising.

An official surnamed Jiang from Songjiang Public Transportation Co told Shanghai Daily that Wu, 49, probably lost control of his wheel due to illness.

“From surveillance cameras, we saw that he suddenly lifted his hands from the wheel at the crossroads with abnormal look on his face, like he fell ill,” he said.

Police are investigating.

Jiang could not comment on Wu’s health, but said driver undergo annual health checks.

“Inspectors at the terminal stations of the Songjiang No. 17 bus said they didn’t find anything unusual about his health yesterday,” he said, adding that the company will ask inspectors to be alert after the accident.

A colleague said he was shocked by the death.

“He was always very healthy and hardly ever fell ill,” he said.

Shifts for some drivers, including Wu, were cut to a half day from a day a year ago.

“Our job has been made less tiring, but considering that we had been working 15 hours a day for decades, we might not be that healthy as we look,” said the 46-year-old colleague.
