Bus driver detained
A BUS driver who allowed 66 people to get on a vehicle designed to hold only 49 passengers has been sentenced to two months’ criminal detention and fined 2,000 yuan (US$307) for dangerous driving, the Jiading District People’s Court said yesterday. The case is the first since the law was changed to make vehicle overloading a crime.
The driver was apprehended at a checkpoint while traveling from east China’s Jiangsu Province to Shanghai on February 23. Police counted 17 people more than were allowed sitting on benches in the aisle of the bus. The driver allegedly said he wasn’t even licensed to drive a public bus.
