Bus driver given 6 years’ prison
THE driver of a tour bus that overturned last year killing six people and injuring 43 others was yesterday found guilty of reckless driving and sentenced to six years in prison at the Hongkou District People’s Court.
The fatal incident happened on November 3 as the bus was traveling along Donghai Avenue in the Pudong New Area.
According to prosecutors, driver Zhao Jingliang lost control of the vehicle after reaching down to retrieve a cellphone that had fallen into the footwell. As he moved to pick it up, the bus veered sharply to the right and struck a barrier on the side of the road.
Zhao responded by steering sharply to the left, but his actions caused the vehicle to overturn, the court heard.
He was also ruled to have been driving at between 70 and 75 kilometers per hour in a 60kph zone at the time of the incident. Six passengers were killed in the crash, while 43, including Zhao, were injured.
