Bus driver not drunk or high at time of crash

THE driver of the bus that crashed into a concrete pillar supporting an elevated highway on Wednesday was neither drunk nor high on drugs at the time of the incident, police said yesterday.

Two people were killed and 20 others were injured when the No. 44 bus ploughed into the structure on Yan’an Road W.

The driver, a Shanghai native surnamed Shen, regained consciousness yesterday, but remains in intensive care at Huashan Hospital, police said.

As well as Shen, the hospital is caring for a 2-year-old girl and two of her grandparents who were on the bus at the time of the crash. All three are said to be in a stable condition, police said.

A further eight passengers were treated at Huadong Hospital, where two remain in a critical condition.

Police said yesterday they had yet to determine the cause of the crash, but are continuing to collect evidence from witnesses and review footage from surveillance cameras.

The crash happened about 11:40am on Wednesday as the bus was traveling along Yan’an Road W.

The vehicle hit a pillar located close to a zebra crossing near Dingxi Road after veering sharply out of its lane.
