Businesses targeted by ‘scammers’
FOURTEEN suspects have been detained for allegedly selling phoney POS machines, earning 1.28 million yuan (US$193,000), police said yesterday.
In October last year, the suspects, originally from Jiamusi city in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, began knocking on the doors of small businesses in Shanghai, falsely claiming to be employees of UnionPay, a Chinese company that issues POS machines to businesses.
Offering the victims much lower rates than banks, the suspects demanded 2,000 yuan as a machine “activation fee” and promised to refund the money the next day, but the funds were transferred to the gang’s account instead.
