Businessman jailed for dumping waste
A city businessman has been jailed for polluting the environment.
The 32-year-old logistics company owner, surnamed Cheng, offered unlicensed wastewater processing services under another company name and dumped it in suburban green belts, the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.
He was sentenced to five months in jail and fined 2,000 yuan (US$308) for the crime, which netted him more than 70,000 yuan.
According to the court, Cheng set up the logistics company in 2007 and decided to increase his earnings last year by offering unlicensed industrial wastewater processing services.
Using the name of a local chemical plant, he started a new company in March last year and signed a contract with a petrochemical storage and transport firm to handle waste processing.
Cheng bought a used tank truck and employed a driver to load the truck at night.
On August 18 last year, Cheng took over 10 tons of wastewater from the petrochemical company, dumped half of it and sold the other half.
However, police caught him in the act of dumping the last of the wastewater into a ditch in a green belt near Linghai Road. He ran away from the scene of the crime but later surrendered to the authorities after receiving a phone call from a police officer.
