Cabbie linked to woman found drowned in creek

A 47-year-old cabbie suspected of robbing and killing a pregnant woman in suburban Songjiang District has been detained, police said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Fang, told police that he committed the robbery and murder because he had a huge gambling debt and desperately needed money to raise his four children.

The victim, surnamed Chen, in her third month of pregnancy, went missing after she saw a movie with some colleagues and got in a taxi to go home on January 31, thepaper.cn reported.

Chen’s body was found in a creek in Songjiang one week later. Her mouth was covered with tape and her hands and feet were bound, and an autopsy later showed that she had drowned.

Chen’s husband, Zhang, who was in Changzhou, east China’s Jiangsu Province, for a class reunion the day she went missing, said the last message he received from her — at 7:47pm — said she was on her way home in a taxi. However, she didn’t arrive and her family was unable to get in touch with her. After Zhang got home at 12pm, he received several messages from the bank about suspicious withdrawals.

Since Chen always carried some cash with her and seldom withdrew money from his credit card, he guessed that something had happened to her and called the police.

Zhang was later informed that the cabbie was suspected of murdering his wife and that he had fled to his hometown in central China’s Henan Province, where he was captured by police on February 2.

According to police, Fang forced Chen to give him all her belongings and tell him the password of the bank card. After choking her until she was unconscious, he taped her mouth and bound her hands and feet.

Then he put her in the car trunk, drove to the creek and dumped her in it.

Fang returned to his residence, disguised himself and went to a local ATM to withdraw money before driving to his hometown the next morning.
