Cabbie ‘slit prostitute’s throat’
A suspected robber confessed to murdering a prostitute two years ago, Songjiang District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.
After he was picked up on suspicion of robbing an unlicensed female cabbie in October last year, the man allegedly confessed to police that he had slit a prostitute’s throat after having sex with her in 2014, prosecutors said.
The man, a former cabbie surnamed Sun, became addicted to gambling in late 2013, which led to heated arguments between himself and his wife, according to prosecutors. In January 2014, after a row with his wife about his gambling problem, Sun went to a hair salon where prostitution services were offered.
Sun got into a brawl with a prostitute surnamed Du. He allegedly slit her throat with a knife during the fight, said the prosecutors.
Sun fled the scene and hid in Kunshan in neighboring Jiangsu Province, returning nearly two weeks later to resume working in Songjiang District.
But last year, after he was fired by his taxi company, he ran out of money and decided to commit a robbery.
He got into an unlicensed taxi and threatened the female driver with a shard of glass he had found on the roadside, demanding that she give him her cash, bank card and password.
Police arrested him the next day after his DNA matched up with a sample found at the murder scene.
