Cameras to catch lane cheats

THE city for the first time will use automatic traffic cameras to catch drivers who don’t merge lanes properly, cutting out other drivers.

The first camera has been set up on the South-North Elevated Road near Luban Road, where two lanes converge and many vehicles try to cut in to save time when the flow moves slowly.

Drivers must allow a safe space for merging.

“Such cutting-ins are very likely to cause traffic accidents,” Du Jingyang, an officer with the traffic police told Shanghai Daily. “We have set up the camera to crack down such violations in the hope of preventing traffic accidents and keeping a good traffic order.”

Signs have been posted and warnings painted on roads.

Traffic regulations say vehicles should take turns merging. Violators face a 200 yuan (US$28.50) fine.

As of yesterday, the camera had caught 13 violations. More are due to be installed.

The cameras operate automatically.

All violations caught by the camera will be followed up by officers again before the tickets are issued,” Du said.

It’s not all smooth. One driver did not allow a converging car in yesterday.

“That car just did not move forward,” he said. “I guess he, or more likely she, is a new hand and afraid of changing lanes when the flow is intensive. If I waited, the traffic flow would stop there.”
