Cameras to zoom in on illegal parking

SURVEILLANCE cameras designed to spot illegally parked cars have been installed at eight locations in Changning District, according to traffic police.

While a police officer with a standard camera can identify a maximum of 50 illegally parked vehicles per day, each of the new cameras can “catch over 300 violators a day,” they said, without elaborating.

The new cameras record the plate information of all cars parked illegally and then two minutes later check to see if the vehicles are still there. If they are, their owners will be given a ticket, even if they are sitting inside them.

Police have two ways to fight illegal parking. One is to take a picture of the violator, which can be used as evidence. The owners of vehicles parked in no-parking areas for more than two minutes can be fined 200 yuan (US$32.50). This does not apply if the driver is in the vehicle, in which case, they will simply be asked to move.

The second way is to use a remote control camera, which scans an area for more than two minutes to identify parking violators.

The new surveillance cameras are situated on Kaixuan, Hongxu, Xinhua, Xinyu, Honggu and Huichuan roads. More will be installed later.
