Campaign for cleaning, greening
CITY authorities will redevelop the environment in 22 key city-level areas, covering 105 square kilometers, to replace illegal buildings, officials said yesterday.
The campaign will include cleaning up areas within 1 kilometer of waterways.
The Shanghai Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development plans to knock down 50 million square meters of illegal buildings.
The government will also focus on improving conditions in rural areas.
The city plans 120 major municipal projects this year, with an investment of more than 130 million yuan (US$19 million).
About 480,000 sqm of old housing in the downtown area and 44,000 sqm in suburban towns will be renovated.
Late last month, Jing’an District knocked down more than 8,000 sqm of illegal construction on the east bank of the Dongjiaojing River, near Changzhong Road.
They will be replaced by recreational areas, including walking paths, waterside terraces and sculptures.
There are an estimated 77,600 sqm of illegal buildings within 10 meters of the banks of the 11 rivers in Jing’an. By February, the district had basically cleared all of the illegal buildings.
Baoshan District also aims to clear at least 8 million sqm of illegal buildings this year.
