Cancer patient held following machete attack on medics
A CANCER patient has been held by police in connection with a machete attack at a city hospital yesterday morning that left four people injured.
A doctor and two nurses were among victims of the assault at the Shanghai No. 5 People’s Hospital at 10:40am.
The 68-year-old patient, surnamed Zhang, is alleged to have produced a 20-centimeter machete and slashed at the medics’ heads.
Minhang District police said they are not in a life-threatening condition.
Zhang was stopped by staff and held by police. A security guard was injured restraining him, city government said.
Police said Zhang received treatment for lymphatic cancer at the hospital this month.
The injured doctor was said to be Cai Yuankun, director of the surgical department, who had treated Zhang.
Cai suffered finger fractures trying to shield his head from machete blows.
The nurses were named Fang Fang and Sheng Yanfeng,
The hospital said Zhang had been admitted twice in a month for fluid on his left foot.
It claims he refused to cooperate in his first test conducted by Cai on February 23 and left without giving notice.
On March 3, Zhang is said to have returned to see the doctor again. He was diagnosed with a tumor and further tests scheduled. But he left again without getting approval on Sunday, the hospital said.
While at hospital, he attempted to jump to his death but was stopped by two doctors who told him he may survive cancer.
However, Zhang didn’t believe them and demanded to leave, a doctor at the hospital surnamed Teng said.
Zhang is said to have returned yesterday morning, carrying a machete wrapped in cloth and launched an attack without saying a word.
Pictures uploaded by Teng showed the injured medics covered in blood and with stitches to their heads.
