Candy firm sues over TV show’s death link

A TAIWAN-BASED manufacturer of jelly candies is suing the producers of a TV show in which a child choked to death on one of its products.

The plaintiff, Want Want Holdings Ltd, is seeking 200,000 yuan (US$30,700) in compensation from four companies, including Shanghai-based SMG Pictures and Internet giant Tencent, involved in the production of the show “Grow Up,” the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.

The offending episode, which was broadcast in February last year, includes a scene in which a doctor explains how his 4-year-old daughter died after eating a jellied candy, before the cameras cut to a close up of a popular Want Want product, prosecutors said.

The manufacturer argued that the scene was damaging to its reputation and after failing to convince the producers to remove it, or at least disguise its product, filed the legal action in August last year.

As well as the financial compensation, Want Want is seeking a public apology, prosecutors said.

No verdict was reached yesterday.
